Dictioneer
What is Dictioneer?
The Dictioneer service provides Professional Naming Services and allows you to outsource the creative process for naming your product, service or company while you focus on other things.
How does Dictioneer work?
The Dictioneer service starts by discussing, in broad strokes, what you want this name to convey to potential customers. We develop a message together and then the Dictioneer takes the ball and runs with it. The variables are put into a little-black-box where everything is analyzed. The requirements are investigated across cultural boundaries and regions if the product is global. Sometimes the names will be plain english [or otherwise naturally formed words], sometimes they are contractions or fanciful fabricated names that never existed before. Many people believe that fanciful fabricated names are a bad thing. In the Internet age, they are sometimes precisely what is needed. For instance, Dictioneer is a contraction of two words, Diction and Engineer. Generic terms are sometimes troublesome in terms of maintaining a brand position and trademarking a generic term has legal issues that are best avoided.
Depending on what is requested, a panel can be convened including attorneys, engineers and other creatives. Together we would create a number of names from which to choose.
What is provided at the end?
A name, or product line depending on the requirements. Each name will have a complete profile of the analysis. The profile contains the meaning(s), rationale behind the name being provided, etymology and limitations or road bumps that might impact the name.
Although the Dictioneer will provide one name by standard practice, additional names can be provided as agreed upon. If you have time and allow Dictioneer to mull the options over as much as possible, the results could be dramatically different than if given more time. Dictioneer does not maintain a list of names with various meta data attached from which your list is culled. A predetermined list will limit the possibilities and bias the results.
What is guaranteed (The Big Five Abilities):
Memorability
Brandability
Trademarkability
Domainability
Spellability
What does “The Big Five” mean?
The big five consist of the framework the Dictioneer works within.
Memorability:
The name will be as short as possible. Brevity is key to memorability. We can easily remember a 7 digit phone number, it gets harder as we go to 10 but we are used to it. Dictioneer encapsulates the description of a service, the meaning of a business and the feeling of your company in single word or phrase. Unlike describing a service like Dictioneer, the term Dictioneer provides an instantly memorable name and the intended audience will understand what it provides.
Brandability:
Brandability means a unique word, or one that is unused in your sector, combined with memorability to make it recognizable. You can hitch your wagon to it, and it will pull itself through the rough seas of business.
Trademark Ability:
The Preliminary Trademark Search minimizes the wasted time performing the due diligence your legal team will need to do to make sure names or phrases aren’t trademarked. Although Dictioneer does a search of the USPTO database, it is by no means exhaustive. When a search is performed, it is in good faith that any names we provide you as a deliverable were not discovered to be obviously infringing.
Domain Ability:
Words or phrases that are provided will have a domain attached unless Dictioneer is told not to limit the deliverable Word+Domain listings. The combination package is the default deliverable. If a name is a high target, we will provide the contact information or acquire the domain.
Spell Ability (No Spelling Bees):
The No Spelling Bee requirement means that when you get a name from us, it won’t require someone to figure out how to spell the name. This requirement is framed during our discussion, and if you request that we create fabricated terms, we obviously waive this requirement.
Final words:
As was mentioned previously, due diligence. The only thing that you will need to do, name wise, is to seek legal assistance in performing that typical due diligence to trademark your new name. This typically includes an exhaustive search of the USPTO to make sure your new name does not conflict.
